Future & Young Thug Debut Horror-Inspired “Group Home” Video

Last year, Future and Young Thug dropped a surprising mixtape Super Slimey, while also releasing their solo LPs respectively.

Previously dropping the visuals of “All da Smoke” and “Mink Flow” from Super Slimey in January, the two rappers are now back with the latest, this time for the mixtape’s last single, “Group Home.”

Directed by VideoGod, the clip serves up horror-movie tropes, as the visuals transition from Future in an odd looking chamber with body bags hanging from the ceiling, to tiny humans in scary masks, walls filled with cryptic writings, and the duo posted up outside of a lavish mansion on a wintery day.

Best Tracks of the Week: Travis Scott, Rae Sremmurd & More

If this week’s best new songs are any indication, the month of May is going to be a proper lit-uation. And though he may not be in the good graces of the majority of humanity, we kind of have to thank Kanye West for that; not only did he deliver a star-turn on Travis Scott’s phenomenal new track “Watch”, but he executive-produced the new single from Christina Aguilera, which is perhaps the oddest, most unexpected delight of the year in pop thus far.

Of course, there were a plethora of other sonic treats to choose from this week. A B-side from Playboi Carti (also featuring Travis) served up some mellowness, while Rico Nasty dropped a remix of her track “Smack a Bitch” with CupcakKe that provided the polar opposite of all things mellow. Falling somewhere in the middle we have another lush taster from SSION’s return album, an acerbic take on gender roles from rising British MC slowthai and a surprisingly eerie cut from Rae Sremmurd’s just-released triple album.

All those and more can be found in this edition of Best Tracks of the Week:

Right, so clearly Beach House’s album 7, finally out next week, is going to be stupendous. Consistently the same across their flawless career and yet continually mining new inspiration, their seventh (duh) full-length is going to be the mysterious music to turn to for all your bong-laced summer nights this year – “Black Car” in particular seems designed for melancholic walks home; the stars twinkling cloyingly at you all the way.

It’s safe to say that a new Xtina track was not something any of us anticipated from 2018, let alone one featuring Ty Dolla $ign and 2 Chainz and produced by Kanye West. But here we are. Sure, it sounds like five songs crushed into one and sure, it’s a bit of a sensory overload. But hot damn, just try and deny that this isn’t among the most immersive, unbelievably pleasurable pop experiences you’ve had in the past year.

Love hurts, surprise. It’s far from an enlightening philosophy in over half a century of pop music that proves that point well enough, but Playboi Carti certainly introduces a element of ‘angrily faded’ to the proceedings that feels, if not wholly unique, pointedly passionate. With synths that cut like a laser gun (particularly the blaring, fog horn-like buzz that surrounds the whole endeavor) and a Travis Scott feature that aches with yearning, you’d be hard-pressed to find fault in this entry to the genre.

If you ever wondered what a trap-version of the Halloween soundtrack produced by Rae Sremmurd and Future sounded like, search no further. A surprisingly eerie, extremely unsettling cut from the Sremm’s freshly-released triple album, it adds a distinct flavor of terror that is worlds away from the breezy cuts we’ve heard thus far like “Powerglide”, “Perplexing Pegasus”, and “CLOSE”. But like, a kind of terror that makes you flex while faded.

There are literally no words that can describe the unbelievably hard levels of ‘do-not-fuck-with-me’ that course through this track. Combining the two most fierce femmes we have in hip-hop has produced the sonic equivalent of a bubblegum shit storm; as if Beastie Boys’ iconic “Sabotage” featured way more acrylic nails. CupcakKe’s kiss-off that “bitches be hiding like pregnant Kylie” is straight up Shakespearean in its levels of genius, while Rico uttering “bitch you a fucking bum” is enough to make even the most jacked frat boy take a damn seat. Ladies and gentleman, this is sugar trap.

After the holy chorale of lead single “bless ur heart”, serpentwithfeet’s follow-up is a shock to the system; the pawing of the demons cast out from the serenity previously promised. It’s downright spooky, a feeling highlighted by the layers of vocals in multiple octaves uttering strange lamentations of a love lost. Debut album soil is now just a month away, and in case it wasn’t clear, serpentwithfeet is gonna take us all to church.

slowthai’s latest is all about the ladies, or at least, it’s a frank admission of the complex feelings men usually have about them. “This one’s for the ladies / ‘Cus they have our babies / and they drive us crazy / but they made us men” he spits on the chorus as lullaby chimes plink delicately beneath him. It’s another win for the rising British MC, displaying his natural proclivity to tackle bracing subjects with nuanced analysis – delivered via acrobatic bars, naturally.

The offerings we’ve heard so far from SSION’s big return album have covered a lot of bases; lead single “Comeback” was a Queen-like tour through the history of 20th century pop-rock, while collab with Ariel Pink “At Least the Sky Is Blue” went go-for-broke indie-glam balladry. “Heaven Is My Thing Again” is significantly more turnt than its predecessors, offering up a murky, irresistibly groovy slice of darkwave synth-pop. Suffice to say, we are here. for. it.

The long-promised, glorious land of AstroWorld is finally coming into focus. Sounding every bit like the neon carnival of molly-laced nightmares we’ve been expecting, Travis Scott’s A-list collab seriously delivers. Lil Uzi nearly steals the whole show for himself, though Kanye’s admission of falling into the sunken place while La Flare out-adlibs his own high standard of adlibbing makes this a truly harmonious collab. Album now, plz.

When Troye Sivan dropped “My My My!” at the top of this year, we had a feeling that a serious pop star was on the rise. “Bloom”, the second single from whatever project this wunderkind is cooking up, could not be titled better; we now know that he is destined for international pop stardom. Taking cues from the ecstatic percussion of ’80s pop from his Aussie-countrymen INXS, Sivan’s latest is not just sugary-sweet but finger lickin’ good.

Future & Chance the Rapper Drop New Track “My Peak”

Last week Future shared a new track featuring PARTYNEXTDOOR, “No Shame,” which will be featured on Director X’s upcoming Superfly remake. Now, just days later, the Atlanta hip-hop artist is back with yet another new tune, this time featuring Chance the Rapper and King Louie.

Chance originally teased the track on Instagram in February last year, so fans have been kept waiting for some time. Future and Chance previously teamed up on “Smoke Break” from the 25-year-old Chicago rapper’s Coloring Book mixtape.

After listening to “My Peak,” be sure to hit us with your thoughts in the comment section.

Young Thug & Future Got Each Other’s Names Tattooed on Themselves

Young Thug and Future, two of Atlanta’s finest, share a bond that goes beyond music, it would seem. The pair of artists are so tight, in fact, that they have each other’s names tattooed on themselves.

Thugger recently revealed the news when speaking with Spotify for their Scrolling In The Deep series. “Man, me and this n***a got each other’s names tatted on us. That’s how we feel. It’s forever,” Young Thug stated.

Thug and Future have of course collaborated a number of times in recent years, even going so far as to releasing a joint project, Super Slimey, in 2017.

In addition to speaking on body ink with Spotify, Young Thug also dished on his feature on Childish Gambino’s “This Is America.”

“[Childish Gambino] got in touch with Reese LaFlare,” Thug noted. “I think they cool, friends or whatever. He told him to come to the [studio]. He said he has a song for me for his last album. I tweeted one time, I was like, ‘I bet I be on Gambino’s last album.’ I’m on his last album, it’s crazy. He’s really not making music after this.”

In related news, J. Cole just announced his ‘KOD’ tour with Young Thug.

Best Tracks of the Week: Childish Gambino, Playboi Carti & More

Love him or hate him, no discussion of this week’s best new songs can begin until we address Childish Gambino’s latest. His single “This Is America” dominated the conversation in this week’s pop culture, thanks in no small part to its devastating accompanying music video. Musically it holds up too, but that’s far from the only point of discussion in new tunes.

This week our headphones were filled with fresh tasters from upcoming albums we’re seriously hyped on; Death Grips gave us a surprisingly melodic offering from their impending doomsday-LP Year of the Snitch while Buddy brought forth a healthy bit of neo-funk, in sharp contrast to the darker, trap-oriented vibes we’ve heard so far. And bringing it all home is a pop-rap hybrid from Rita Ora, who managed to pull together an all-star roster including Charli XCX and Cardi B for the banger extolling bisexuality, “Girls”.

All those and more make this edition of Best Tracks of the Week:

Thus far, the tasters we’ve gotten from Buddy’s impending breakthrough full-length have showed off his rap chops, particularly on the stinging “Black” with A$AP Ferg. But it seems that’s far from the only side of himself the Compton MC is ready to show off to the world. “Trouble on Central” is a radiant, bubbling bit of neo-funk, a track where the marriage of real-world struggles with ebullient sonic joy makes it worthy of peak-Stevie Wonder comparisons.

Juxtaposing as many styles behind the booth as visual references in front of the camera, Childish Gambino’s internet-breaking new single is a smorgasbord of genre, all of it tightly-wrapped in one of the most expertly-produced tracks Glover has offered us under his musical moniker yet. That voices like 21 Savage and Young Thug can be stitched into the sonic patchwork quilt without calling attention to themselves are one of the numerous bits of subtlety that make this song so successfully tick.

You just can’t predict what Death Grips are going to do next, it’s a pointless endeavor. So it’s a pleasant surprise to find the hype surrounding their upcoming album Year of the Snitch (one that has found them in the studio with the director of Shrek) has produced “Streaky”, a streamlined version of the trip-hop oriented work they started laying down on 2016’s Bottomless Pit. In other words, it’s far more of a club-oriented jam we can groove to than a machine gun assault on the ear drums; with Death Grips it’s always a 50/50 chance between the two.

“My Peak” would basically be a heartfelt ballad if it weren’t for the trunk-rattling percussion courtesy of DJ Esco. The piano-led theme is a worthy soundtrack to Future, Chance the Rapper, and King Louie claiming they’re still not even at the top of their game. Bonus points for Chano opening his verse by congratulating his baby mama on getting her Master’s degree.

We’re extremely vibing with Kojey Radical’s “Water”, from it’s oozing funk to Mahalia’s angelic, effortless vocals that waft in like a much-needed summer breeze. With Swindle on production duties, the track infuses his reggae and jazz sensibilities, resulting in a low-key, infectious jam.

Playboi Carti has – once again – seriously delivered; his surprise new album Die Lit is currently soundtracking the Highsnobiety Music HQ and providing unadulterated faded bliss. The project has a few choice cuts, but this cheeky Nicki Minaj collab is the most immediate standout. That Carti can turn “poke it out” into a single syllable is impressive enough, but the effervescent production and Nicki’s subtle re-working of “Magnolia” makes this a cheeky, self-referential bop that counts this among Playboi’s best.

It’s basically summer, which means dancehall season is upon us. Thanks to Popcaan, we have a fresh jam to add to our rotation with everything we love about the genre – affirming compliments, breezy melodies, and syncopated beats to get low to. If you can’t get enough Popcaan, stayed tuned for his upcoming sophomore album Forever.

Rita Ora, Charli XCX, Cardi B, and Bebe Rexha have linked up for the casual bisexual anthem we didn’t know we needed. Over a bangin’ summer-ready beat, the girls wax poetic about their desire to kiss girls – often under the influence of red wine. There’s really not much more to say about this except that it’s everything one needs from a pop song, and we are always here for a collab between pop and rap’s finest.

Is there anything new here that you wouldn’t expect to find from a Skepta-banger at this stage in his career? No, but that doesn’t mean “Pure Water” is anything less than a certified trunk-rattler. Over haunting synths that evoke the yearning of Vangelis’ iconic Blade Runner score, Skepta inserts a small arsenal of snares and snaps – some of which lyrical, evidenced best when he spits inspired kiss-offs like “I had to chat to Cupid, said, ‘little man you know I ain’t stupid.'”

It’s been eight years since Uffie’s explosive debut album Sex Dreams and Denim Jeans, and the French-American artist has more or less been on hiatus, save for her appearance on “Babygirl” from Charli XCX’s Number 1 Angel mixtape last year. Now, she’s officially back in action with “Drugs”, singing into a vocoder as twinkling synths and a laid-back beat creeps in. Our serotonin is officially restored, and we can’t wait to hear more from the queen of blog house.

Best Tracks of the Week: Drake, Meek Mill, Teyana Taylor & More

$
0
0

A certain Toronto rapper rounded out the month of June with his album Scorpion, after a particularly hectic few weeks for music journalists (here’s hoping for a brief respite from the madness). We managed to find a hidden blue diamond in the rough of the long-winded release, which features Fire Marshall Future bringing the heat.

Our girl Charli XCX, who unlike Drake and Kanye, could care less about typical release schedules, dropped two songs we can’t get enough of. Meek Mill debuted a powerful new track onstage at the BET Awards with the help of Miguel and Tyler, the Creator continues to live his best life somewhere in Europe, releasing freestyles between breaking hearts and eating pasta. We even snuck in a track from Teyana Taylor’s album from last week, because in true G.O.O.D. Music fashion, it was fashionably late arriving to the streaming platform party.

All those and more in this week’s best tracks.

The latest from the 88rising crew sounds like drinking an iced coffee and jump roping double dutch style while listening to sped-up N.E.R.D. Though the production is indebted to The Neptunes, the flow of Higher Brothers and BlocBoy JB is something else – weaving in and out like the turn of the jump ropes. MaSiWei’s lines “You talk about the rules / I don’t get it, I just break it” seem to summarize their no-fucks-given approach to spitting bars, which manages to unite the Chinese rap crew and Memphis MC on “Let it Go.”

We never thought we’d be writing about new Chaka Khan music in 2018, but hey, the world is becoming less predictable by the day, and at least this is a positive development. Switch of Major Lazer brings the “Queen of Funk” into the 21st century with a certified bop filled to the brim with ecstatic horns, shifting percussion, bass grooves, and of course Chaka’s legendary voice.

Charli XCX continues to lowkey shatter every industry model of release scheduling with the surprise drop of this double single. Featuring the usual suspects A.G. Cook and SOPHIE behind the booth, she is incapable of making anything that isn’t confectionary sugar-pop. “Focus” brings the heavy mood and handclaps while “No Angel” riffs on the sort of finger-snapping singalongs that first brought her to public conscious in the halcyon days of 2012. We are, of course, here for both.

At this point, cupcakKe could sneeze and we’d add it to our best tracks of the week by default, but she earns it every single time. Ironically, she does indeed sneeze on the track, but there’s so much more coming out of the oven. From the droplet sounds and sizzling to her never-stale bars , we’re completely devouring the fresh batch of “Hot Pockets” she’s serving.

Drake’s Scorpion arrived today, yet another lengthy project with a lot of indistinguishable filler. Nevertheless, we will continue to sip champagne of the papi variety, and “Blue Tint” has got Future in the mix doing his now-signature scratchy falsetto, which is like a much needed breeze in a stuffy room. It’s got the requisite Drizzy talk about women, material possessions, and how he’s still on the top of his game, but the production by JRHitmaker, Taz Taylor, !llmind, Supah Mario successfully shakes things up in “Side B” of the album.

Meek Mill aptly debuted his latest single “Stay Woke” at the BET Awards this week. It was a powerful statement on police brutality and the disproportionate amount of black men behind bars in the U.S. WIth cascading piano and a good ol’ fashioned beat, Miguel compliments Mill’s verses with soaring vocals that gesture towards prevailing, hopeful changes afoot.

There’s honestly no better reunion than one that involves Rome Fortune and Toro Y Moi because when these two great minds come together the result is pure house-disco magic. Blast this feel-god bop at your next block party and watch as everyone starts trying to be your friend.

Teyana Taylor’s incredible new album broke the 7-track format instilled in the previous G.O.O.D. Music releases, and thank goodness for that. Tacked on to the end of K.T.S.E. is the record’s secret weapon – a go-for broke ballroom floor-filler here to teach all the children that Miss Taylor is not your average showgirl. Mother herself, Mykki Blanco, earns a co-writing credit and the album’s scene-stealing feature (not sorry, Kanye) that is pure opulence, they own everything.

The Vancouver rapper reconnects with New Jersey producer Charlie Heat to bring another banger into the world. Their latest collaboration is basically a humble brag about being the baddest bitch on your block and not blinking an eye at anyone that crosses your path.

Nearly a year after the release of Flower Boy, a lot has changed. Where the world was fretting over the possibility that Tyler, the Creator was coming out on record, now it seems pretty much certain; spitting bars about Call Me By Your Name (the second Timothée Chalamet reference in as many singles) will do that. It’s a beautiful journey to witness, made all the more lush with Tyler’s consistently-flawless rhymes married to ever-warmer beats.

The 9 track mixtape boasts all-caps song names, and just one feature by South Carolina rapper Young Scooter on “DOH DOH.” Future is currently working on his seventh studio album, which will follow Future and Hndrxx released in 2017.
